Special Education and Math Technology

As a teacher of Geometry CC (Collaboration between special ed and regular ed) I notice my special education students struggle with just paper and pencil.  I know there are math videos for them to watch but I want a program that will speak to assist in reading the problem.  On most occasions, my students miss the question because they read the problem incorrectly and refuse to ask how.  Even if I could get a set of tablets with a preloaded book, I would need a program that could "read" symbols, pictures, and formulas correctly.  Does anyone know of any for any type of tablet or iPod or iPhone?

Open or Closed WIFI?

SO my school has now cut off access to any part of you tube because students were"getting around" the proxy and looking at bad things.  What is the big deal with our WIFI being locked down?  If we opened it up, the students would be more resourceful at searching the internet for materials needed in each subject or project.  Also, teachers would be able to utilize more tools to assist in lessons and presentations.  At some point, this district needs to give up with these blocks so all students can bring in their IPads or tablets  and us tech-geeky teachers can get them to learn without discipline problems.

Mangahigh is great to use if your school will buy the logins for the students to track their results.  I have used this with my high school Geometry students.  They dig it.

Apps for the IPAD in the Geometry Classroom

Some apps I have come across to assist with learning Geometry.

1. Apparent Etch- Geometry Stash:  This app contains any and all theorems needed in a Geometry class.  It also gives a picture representation of each one.  It is still a free app and very useful for the average high school student or adult needing to review Geometry.

2. Your Teacher:  This is not a free app.  But what I like about his app is that it gives the learner video representations.  If you like this app, Your Teacher also has other courses available too.

3. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt- HMH Fuse Geometry:  Coming to a classroom near your.  This app is new and promises to follow the new core curriculum.  This app is to REPLACE text books and will be interactive with students and their IPADS.

Quickly approaching us 3.14, thats March 14th.  At 1:59 we will all celebrate Pi!  (Math joke)  What are some things you in your classroom are going to do to celebrate the reason the wheel is round?
